There is a lot of goodness in a cupcake aside from the taste.
This year’s 10th annual Lloydminster & District Co-op’s Cupcakes for the Cause campaign will raise funds for the mammography program at Lloydminster Hospital from the sale of cupcakes up to Oct. 30.
“We picked the cause in partnership with the Lloydminster Health Foundation,” said Kristine Knourek, the Co-op’s marketing and communications manager, with the campaign launch on Oct. 2.
“They have found that over the past few years this cause has really resonated in conjunction with October being Breast Cancer Awareness month.”
Nearly $15,000 has been raised over the past 10 years in support of various health-related initiatives and programs, including the mammography program, senior care, and obstetrics at the Lloydminster Hospital.
“I think we can attribute the success of the campaign to the support of membership we have, and to a community overall that really jumps on board with initiatives that help benefit all individuals in our community,” said Knourek.
“Our hope is to surpass that $15,000 10-year mark over the course of the campaign.”
Funding for the mammography program will provide women in the region with early breast cancer detection and awareness.
“To celebrate the 10th anniversary of this fundraising campaign highlights our membership’s faithful support of causes close to each of our hearts, healthcare being one of them,” said Lloyd Co-op CEO Don Stephenson.
“Making a difference happens in big and small ways, and sometimes takes the form of a freshly-baked cupcake.”
Vanilla and chocolate flavoured cupcakes are baked fresh with $2 from the sale of every six-pack of cupcakes and $0.50 from every pair of cupcakes to be donated to the mammography program.
“The donation is made right back to the community by purchasing those cupcakes,” said Knourek.
Two packs and six-packs can be purchased at the Lloydminster Co-op Marketplace, with duos exclusively available at the Neilburg Co-op grocery store, 18th Street Crossing Co-op Gas Bar (Hwy 17 South), Ironwells Co-op Gas Bar (Hwy 16 East), Hampton Square Co-op Gas Bar (Hwy 16 West) and the Co-op Fuel Centre (Hwy 16 West).
“They are finished in pink and white icing, so they are really easy to identify in any retail stores that we are selling them in so you immediately know they are for Cupcakes for the Cause,” said Knourek.
Each cupcake is decorated with the Health Foundation logo.
“Our foundation is beyond grateful for the funds raised through ‘Cupcakes for the Cause’ by our longtime friends at Lloydminster & District Co-op over the past decade,” said Health Foundation CEO Wendy Plandowski.
“We are honoured to be the recipient of the program for the 10th straight year, and will put this donation to great use enhancing mammography in Lloydminster.”
Plandowski, who is a breast cancer survivor, said support for mammography will remind other women to consult with their physician about their own breast health and screening plan.
