The City of Lloydminster is set to welcome hundreds of softball players as well as their family, friends and fans, for the 2017 under-18 Women’s Canadian Fast Pitch Championships.
The Lloydminster Liners will play host to the July 31 to Aug. 6 event, but they need the help of everyone in the Border City to make it a success.
A call is out for anyone who can volunteer their time to help with gate admissions, diamond maintenance, scorekeeping, announcing, concessions, 50/50 sales, set up, tear down and beer gardens service to put in their name.
Warren Noble, chair of the Canadian Fast Pitch Championships, said there are about 20 volunteers signed up so far, but they need over 100 to run the tournament efficiently. He said the championships are a week-long event that will have games being played from 8 a.m. to nightfall each day, so if more volunteers sign up, there will be less strain on everyone involved.
“We’re going to blitz the city pretty hard for this event and hopefully we can get those volunteers,” said Noble. “The weekend is one thing, but getting us through the week would be another. (We) need those volunteers during the week during daytime hours.”
Noble said the hope is teenagers between the ages of 14 to 18 can step up to help them run the scorekeeping section of the event that will incorporate electronic devices such as iPads, as well as tried and true methods of pen and paper.
He said they’re also hoping other volunteers come out to help run the beer gardens, take tickets at admission, and assist in any other duties that are needed.
Twenty teams from Quebec to British Columbia will vie for a national title at Lloydminster’s Legion Park. These teams will play the round robin portion of the event during the first four days, and compete for the championships on the final three days. It is expected that upwards of 60 games will be played.
“I can’t tell you what the economic impact will be,” said Noble. “But, I’m sure it’s fairly significant when you have 20 teams coming to Lloydminster for a week straight and (buying) a week’s input of food and everything going with it.”
Noble said people can sign up to volunteer right now through Softball Canada’s website under the U18 Women’s Canadian Fast Pitch Championships link and choose what they’d like to help with, and when they can do it in their submission. He said people can also volunteer through the Lloydminster Amateur Softball Association’s website.
“There is no deadline,” he said. “We’ll take right up until day of. If they want to volunteer the day of, then we’ll get them in there.”
